Winter Wonderland

This painting was done for the Gnomon Workshop monthly contest. Did some initial pencil sketches and then worked up several ideas from there in photoshop. Originally thinking around the theme of the Snow Queen, some kind of winter palace with an underlying feel of enchantment. Then developed idea of children discovering a antiquated ice kingdom in an old tree log populated by fae folk who are celebrating the winter fall with a strange kind of Venetian Waltz on ice...so kind of like the Snow Queen meets Alice in Wonderland! I Spent quite a bit of time working out and rendering the animal dancers but they are little lost in the overall scene which is less highly rendered. Any cc is always welcome thanks

Oil Cuts

This is my entry for the Strange Behavior challenge.

The idea is that genetic engineering has enabled trees to become a new source of oil and petroleum and are cultivated for that purpose. Unfortunately due to other genetic changes they have also become more effective at protecting themselves from predatory humans...

I didnt have a fixed idea of the story but let the concept develop in stages as new ideas occured or were suggested by others.

Time taken: a lot, I wasnt counting
Mostly Photoshop work and a little Painter.

Visitation

This started as a speed painting but I got a little carried away with adding some details Took about 5 hours I think. Used mostly gimp and some photoshop, all with the basic hard brush set to opacity with wacom tablet (ie no custom brushes). The painting developed from blank canvas with practically no ref (only images I did use was some google pics of Indians to get some ideas on apparel and the bird skull). It was initially meant as an exercise in figure and anatomy as I have been working through some of the Loomis guides on figure drawing. From blank canvas I sketched in some interesting shapes for the overall composition, until something became suggestive and then worked up the main figure from there. I then developed the landscape and it was at this point that an aboriginal theme started to emerge. The addition of the flying craft was made partly to give a focal point for the figures line of sight. Colour development came at a later stage as the painting was monochrome to start with. I kept the figure and landscape mostly in warm greys which helps to emphasise the otherwordly quality of the ships in more intense blues. Any comments are very welcome

Asita

This is my first digital painting attempt...It was created entirely with Photoshop. It took about 20 hours at a guess. The initial concept came from a book titled "A Poem on the Life of the Buddha" by Grevel Lindop. I chose a particular passage as a starting point - this was:

"In the rocks shade
Or under the liquid blaze of stars he made
An art of stilling the breath, distilling the thin
Mountain air to a radiant essence within
The guant, scarred body, mind poised like a hawk
Riding clear airs of thought, hearing gods talk
Sometimes, or merging with silence"

Reference material included my own face for the pose and various pictures of 'sadhus' (a kind of Indian ascetic) and of the milkyway from google - although the actual portrait is completely a work of the imagination. Any constructive criticism is most welcome and thanks for looking!
